The Heritage Classic is an outdoor game of ice hockey that was played on the 22nd November, in the year 2003. It was played in Canada, Alberta between the Montreal Canadians and the Edmonton Oilers. This was the foremost game of ice hockey that was played outdoors in the history of the National Hockey League. The modeling of the game was based on the game during the cold war, which was played between the Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, in the year 2001. The classic took place at the Commonwealth Stadium, in Edmonton. It had a crowd of 57,167 people watching it. This was the highest ever audiences present at any live game of the National Hockey League. It was held on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Edmonton Oilers team joining the National Hockey League. This game was the first game to be broadcasted on CBC. The Heritage Classic was released by the CBC on DVD.
Rumors of the Heritage Classic:
After the success of the heritage classic, numerous rumors have been doing the rounds concerning the event. One of the rumors includes the staging of one more Heritage Classic between the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders, and also between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs. But, the feasibility of such a game is still being investigated. There was another rumor that said that, the Boston Bruins were going to play one outdoor game of hockey at the Gillette Stadium or at the Fenway Park.
