ICE HOCKEY STICK

Introduction:

The instrument used for moving the puck in the game of ice hockey is called the ice hockey stick. The length of the ice hockey stick is 150 to 200 centimeters. It is made up of a slender and long shaft. There is a flat extension called the blade at one end of the stick. The puck is contacted by the stick by the blade. The blade of the ice hockey stick has a length of 25-40 centimeters. The dimensions of the sticks can vary differently. This is because the sticks are made to suit the needs of individual players. The placement of the blade of the ice hockey stick is at an angle of 130 degrees from the shafts axis. This gives the ice hockey stick an appearance of the shape of the letter “L”. The ice hockey stick has a very rigid shaft, but it also has flexibility to enhance shot making. The blade of the ice hockey stick is mostly curved towards the direction in which the skater moves. This aids in lifting or retaining the puck from the surface.

History of the Ice Hockey Stick:

The ice hockey sticks were made from the tree called hornbeam or Carpinus caroliniana originally. But, as the hornbeam tree were not found easily, other woods such as ash and yellow birch that were hard in nature, were used for making the sticks. The oldest ice hockey stick was supposedly made between the year 1852 and the year 1856. It was also believed to be sold at $2.2 million.
