ICE HOCKEY OVERTIME

Introduction:

The Ice Hockey Overtime is the method of finding out the loser or the winner in the game of ice hockey. The overtime periods are the periods that are beyond the third period of the game. In the past, these periods were used on a full length basis. But, due to the transition of the game, the overtime periods are seeing changes such as the sudden deaths, wherein the game is culminated as soon as someone scores a goal. In the season of the year 1983-84, the National Hockey League had started the tradition of five minute extra periods, which was in opposition to the regulation of the twenty minute periods. In the year 1998, the AHL introduced the method of play, in which the teams were given an overtime period of five minutes, but with the condition of playing only four players along with the goaltender. Thus, the overtime periods have seen a lot of transitions and will further be seeing changes, in the future days.

The Shootouts:

In the international matches of ice hockey, the coach of the team selects five players from team, who are given the responsibility of the penalty shootouts during the overtime period. After both the teams have finished with shooting at the opposite goals, the team having the highest number of goals is declared the winner. The NHL ended the games that were tied after the five minutes of the overtime period by way of a shootout. Further developments of the results, finalizing process may be expected in the near future of the game.
